How to Store Dry Beans & and Rice for Long-Term Storage

3 Simple Steps When Storing Dry Beans and Rice

Rice and beans are inexpensive foods that can be stored for 30 years or more if properly packaged, making them good candidates for emergency preparedness food supply. Long-term storage requires air-tight containers and moisture prevention to prevent food spoilage. For this long term type of storage you will need a bucket that has a rubber gasket around the lid for airtight storage. A large mylar bag, the type of bag used to seal military rations. Along with an oxygen gas absorbers. Most people will probably read this and not want to go through the hassle. For now, we will go over storing beans and rice for up to a couple of years in your pantry by following these simple steps.

  1. Transfer your dried beans to a food-safe storage glass container with a tight sealing lid. If you leave them in the bag they came in they will dry out faster.

  2. Remove any broken beans or rocks that you notice.

  3. Place the container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

Anchor Hocking Glass Jar Containers (4-Piece Set)

These glass food jars may be a bit heavier than the previous option, but they feature chic bamboo lids that have strong suction cups which create tight seals to keep food fresh. The lids have small indents on top to make them easy to stack, plus square bases so they are sturdy and stable on any flat surface. You don't have to twist or screw them on — a simple pull off and push on. The 2-quart containers come as a set of four, and they're also available in sets of 1-, 1.5-, or 2.5-quarts. These are my favorite jars, I love the way they look! Not only do I use them in my pantry but they make a nice countertop statement piece in my kitchen.
